Saying “Good Bye”
Just as we carefully prepare our children to start preschool we need to equally prepare them to say good-bye to preschool. In some cases it is just for the summer break, as some of us will be returning next fall. However, many of us will be going on to kindergarten in various schools throughout the area. The passage of time is a very difficult concept for young children to understand.  They may think kindergarten starts tomorrow as soon as Tree Town is finished or the day they have their chance to visit their new school.
During the last weeks in May, the teachers will be talking about the end of the school year. In the three year old classes we will talk about how some children will be returning to Tree Town to perhaps experience a new classroom, teacher and friends. In the four-year-old classes we will talk about going to new schools and making new friends. We will emphasis the fact that our separation does not mean that we are not friends any more. We will discuss ways in which we can still get together with our friends. We can make a phone call, send notes or draw pictures. Children are always welcome to come back to Tree Town for a visit. In our four-year-old classes we will focus on two main activities to help with this transition.  The first activity will be to put together a book “All About Me”. This is a way to look back over our time together at school and remember. The other activity will be to make a list of all the favorite activities we would like to do one more time before we leave preschool. Our goal then is to get through our list before the end of the year.
We encourage you to talk with your child about their feelings during this time. At school we will not only talk about the things that are happy about the end of our school year but also the things that might make us feel sad. You will also receive a pamphlet published by NAEYC in your child’s school bag that you may find helpful.
Though saying “good bye” is hard
Behind each “good bye” is a doorway that opens
 To wonderful new “hellos”!
